ARDS happens when tiny air sacs in the lungs, called alveoli, get damaged. This damage causes fluid from small blood vessels to leak into the air sacs. As fluid builds up, it blocks the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide, making it hard to breathe.
This condition is known as Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). It can be triggered by serious health problems, harmful substances in the air, or physical injuries to the lungs.
Risk Factors for ARDS
Certain people are more likely to develop ARDS, including:
- Critically ill patients
- People with sepsis or pneumonia
- Heavy drinkers and smokers
- Older adults and women (Diamond et al., 2024)
Conclusion
ARDS is a serious lung condition caused by damage to the alveoli. The damage can come from illnesses like pneumonia and sepsis, lung injuries, harmful chemicals, or unhealthy lifestyle habits. When alveoli walls are harmed, fluid leaks into the lungs, making it hard to breathe and preventing normal gas exchange.
In short, ARDS is caused by damage to the lungs that leads to fluid buildup in the air sacs, making breathing very difficult.
